Rise in Families Seeking Help To Get Out of Debt
Saturday, Nov 20, 2010 8:08 am
Recent figures have revealed a sharp increase in the number of Welsh families asking for help to get out of debt.

A regional television show recently aired in Wales (Week in Week Out) discussed the impact of loan sharks on vulnerable families. The show reported that the local Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) had an increase of six thousand cases on the previous year. The CAB reported that there were a worrying number of people with "priority debts" which could result in people losing assets such as their homes.

Other figures were also reported including that rent arrears to landlords were up 88%.

The Citizens Advice Bureau warned of the dangers of doorstep lenders explaining that many people were finding it difficult to find jobs and subsequently this was having a knock-on effect to people's ability to pay their mortgage.

Shelter Cymru, who were also featured on the show, warned that it was the "tip of the iceberg" and with deep cuts due to take place, the number of people looking for help to get out of debt could increase further.
